Humbugs and Christmas Homework!

First Term in Psychology already done and dusted...but what can you remember?

On your return you will be assessed on Cognitive Psychology studies so far. Key issues are:
  • Multi Store Model
  • Working Memory Model
  • EWT - possible problems with it.
For each area you will want to know key research and appropriate technical terms. For the research use the Aims, Procedures, Findings, Conclusions, Criticisms model wherever possible (remember these on your hands).

Research to look at:
  • Peterson + Peterson 1959 pg 5
  • Bahrick etal 1975 pg 5
  • Jacobs 1887 pg 6
  • Baddeley 1966a+b Pg 7
  • Sperling 1960 Pg 9
  • Glanzer + Cunitz 1966 Pg 9
  • Baddeley + Hitch 1976 Pg 13(or learn the song!!!)
  • Loftus + Palmer 1974 Pg 16
  • Loftus etal 1987 Pg 18
  • Yarmey 1993 Pg 19

Also be aware of use of technical language. Pages 24-25 + 108+109 provide useful glossaries.

The flashcards below are an example of a revision tool freely available to you. Use them online or print them off. You can create your own free account, store all your revision cards and print them before exams...but you never lose them! Why not make some for memory?

Eyewitness Testimony - Influencing factors

Hi Psychs

1) Read this article from BBC News following the wrongful killing of Jean Charles de Menezes in London. Based upon this research and your summaries of other key research should EWT be used in court? Your views in the comments section please.

2) In the video below what factors are likely to effect their ability to accurately testify in a court?

(This is a useful series of videos creating a more ecologically valid version of different experiments we have studied - the volunteers believe they are on a lunchbreak from helping Manchester Police - everyone else in the bar are actors).

Do you find easily repeatable tunes annoying but memorable? GOOD

Please find below possibly the most annoying song! However, maybe a great way of learning the Working Memory Model, it's designers and the constituent parts of the model. I expect you all to learn it ready to perform to Miss Knight by Christmas!

1/2 Term Check

Thanks to the 14 people who viewed the blog (leave a comment you miserable 6th formers!).

Take the survey - give me a bit of feedback - it is anonymous and gives me some initial feedback on whether you feel comfortable with your studies.

Comments are also anonymous (unless you add your name) so you can ask for clarification without me knowing who you are.

Coming up next...

Memory in everyday life - Eyewitness Testimony.

Question: - From what we know of models of memory, what problems might exist for police officers and juries when witnesses provide eyewitness testimony?
