Nearly Christmas...but not quite!

OK - help me to help you. At the end of this term I would like you to do two things:

a) Complete a survey about what helps you to learn. The survey was created by Warwick University so the questions are not mine. However, it will help me in knowing how to help you.

CLICK ME FOR ANONYMOUS SURVEY

b) Whilst we are looking at questionnaires - they are an oft used tool by Psychologists to allow people to "self report". I would like you to read pages 94, 96+97. Clicking on the comments below I would like you to summarise the advantages and disadvantages of questionnaires.

Working Memory Revision

When it comes to revising the WMM (which replaces STM in the Multi Store Model which was deemed too simplistic by Baddely and Hitch) you may find the following links helpful:

Multi Store Model of Memory

Next lesson you will be answering a timed question on the working memory model. You will need to know the workings of the model and supporting research for its component parts.

You may choose to use one of the memory techniques for your revision. You can also refer to the chapter on memory in your cat book and may find the links below either helpful or annoying.

If you have a question - write on the comments section below and it is emailed to me.

HM - A Case study

Homework

Does the case study of HM provide evidence for Atkinson and Shiffrin's Multi Store Model (1968)? You may argue yes because... no because... or to some extent...

It should take you about 20 minutes of reading + re-reading plus 10 minutes to write your answer to be returned in the next lesson.

Don't forget...

Well done bloggers. Your next challenge is to use at least one of the techniques of memory improvement to prepare yourself for the next lesson when you will be asked a 4 mark question on one memory improvement strategy.

It is important that you have a real go at using one of the techniques - some of you have already indicated that you use such techniques from last week.

There are two sites below you can hyperlink to if you need a refresher of the information (don't get anxious if you see studies we have not named in lessons - in some topics there are thousands of studies out there, you need to be able to refer to key studies and I will highlight these to you).

Friday 24th June Lesson

Hello Psychologists.

I think I've done well to avoid meetings all year but I am afraid that yet again I have to attend some interviews taking place in school. This is good practice for you as self directed learners (even people at home with broken legs Sam!).

I have recieved details of projects from 2 groups but not from others - please see the last post for details.

So your task today:

a) Make sure I have last week's work sent to myself and Miss Knight
b) For those with planned activities you do need to include the details of previous reseacrh in this field (have a good look at the model write up linked on the first post for A2 to guide you on what you may include here).

See you after activities week.

Friday 17th June - Next Steps Cover

Good morning Psychologists. I am afraid I have to attend a meeting that has only been called this week. I am aware that Miss Knight has added some further views on some of the research proposals. If wanting further certainty the examples on the sheet both below and in the G:Drive (Mr Beech folder A2) are specific to aspects of your syllabus.

This week you need to do the following as a research team but complete your write up as an individual. Whilst you need to work on this together aspects of this can be "divvied" up>

a) Area of research
b) What research has already been done in this field and what conclusions were drawn?
c) Aims of the investigation
d) Hypothesis + null hypothesis
e) Ethical considerations.
f) Standardised procedures (this will take quite a bit of your time)
g) Resources needed
h) Detail of how your results will be collected (eg. the questionnaire, if observations the categories that will be observed)

I would like a copy of this from each group to be emailed to me (if one person is sending this please state who else is in your group). Email to cbeech@redruth.cornwall.sch.uk I will need to check the details of the project before you go ahead after activities week.

Sorry that I am not there - can't be helped on this occasion.

If you were not here last week have a quick look at the blog post from last week including the presentation and example of how to complete a research write up for peer review.

An Easter Egg is a Christian Mnemonic!

Thanks to Will and Kate I am not going to see you until May 6th. It's really important that you are using your time to keep things fresh. You can choose which of these revision activities you do but I want to see the evidence.

Choose at least one of...

1) Complete questions on pg 110-111 and self mark
2) Complete your own set of cue cards either online or on card on the topic of research methods (using pg 108-109 to guide you) Mr Beech to see evidence of work
3) Complete a full past paper for Mr Beech to mark on return? This must be taken from Mr Beech but can be found on the AQA website as linked - June 2009 paper section 1 - Memory

Over Easter if you need to get in touch, leave a comment as this is emailed to me directly. Have a nice Easter!

Retention, retention...retrieval!!!

MAKE YOUR REVISION ACTIVE - PUT THE WORK INTO THE REVISION ACTIVITY SO THAT YOU CAN THEN DO QUICK, MINI REVISION EPISODES.

Homework 1st April 2011
a) This 4 mark question appeared on an exam paper:

Outline how one research study investigated the accuracy of eyewitness testimony (EWT). (4)

However, your task is to outline the ONE main piece of research you prepared revision notes on today (that may be about EWT, individual differences etc... Please do this using the comments link below, you should then be able to see each others' work and have a further set of revision notes (plus you will be inclined to do it well because others will see it!!!)

b) If you have a TV or even better a video recorder watch the series of eyewitness BBC4 3rd 4th + 5th April 11:00pm. All on eyewitness testimony (click on hyperlink for details)

Coming up next week...

Homework:

Use the Cue Cards below (or your own notes + CAT book) to revise key researchers on EWT + CI.

If there are topics or issues you feel unclear about you can use the comments section below to leave a message.

Q Cards for Revision

Homework:

Use Q Cards to revise all topics in the coming months. However, for next week focus upon studies relating to MSM and WMM (all component parts)
Point of clarity for Baddeley 1966 encoding in STM:

Encoding in STM is acoustic according to the findings in the study. Participants were unable to recall acoustically similar words in an STM test (CAT, HAT, MAT), becasue on recalling them they were confused by the fact they sounded similar (they subsituited the actual word with a similar sounding word because they stored the sound, not the meaning)- this is supported by a similar study conducted by Conrad (1964). SO - STM is encoded acoustically.

Working Memory Model Revision

Homework
"Outline the main components of the working memory model." (4)

- Your answer should be under 150 words
- Explain key terms
- Refer to key studies (probably 3 studies)

You answered a similar question on Multi Store Model in a previous assessment with feedback. Look back at this.

If you join get revising (see links) - a free to join service there are a number of revision tools related to Psychology / Memory.

If using text book / notes / internet for revision READ - PUT DOWN - ANSWER - CHECK

DO NOT JUST COPY FROM TEXT AS THIS IS NOT PROCESSING!!!!

Your AFPCC of Key Research for Memory + Bonus tracks

Here's a compromise...

Please find below a document with a summary of key research for the memory unit plus some revision activities for research methods. I haven't made revision cards because...you know that elaborative encoding is what helps retrieval and therefore you will want to make the revision cards!
