Does the case study of HM provide evidence for Atkinson and Shiffrin's Multi Store Model (1968)? You may argue yes because... no because... or to some extent...
It should take you about 20 minutes of reading + re-reading plus 10 minutes to write your answer to be returned in the next lesson.

simply no, because H.M. has the inability to remember information more than 30 seconds - after 30 seconds the information is wiped clean from his STM and even his LTM.
ReplyDeleteAtkinson and Shiffrin porposal was that after rehearsing the information over a period of time the brain would proccess the information in the LTM, however H.M was unable to remember the information consumed no matter how often rehearsed, it would be wiped uncontrolably.
But to some extent, H.M. could remember past events, from 1929 stock market crash, to the 2nd world war. atkinson's (et al) hypothesis has been proven false due to the inability of remembering which H.M. possesses, but on the other hand if this experiment was to have taken place on an ordinary healthy person then the chances of the hypothesis being correct would rise significantly.
